“Due to costs, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.”  This anonymous quote sums our economy up. These are tough times. As a result, businesses are looking for ways to cut costs while still trying to maximize their profit. Many businesses have turned to Internet marketing because it provides an easy way to segment their product towards target markets that potentially could buy their product.

While there is a large upside for the use of Internet marketing, many businesses have not properly implemented a strategy to truly distinguish themselves. Instead, many businesses have saturated the Internet market, making it difficult for consumers to discover their product. This is making it difficult for businesses to make a name for them and to make a profit. But don’t worry because there is a light at the end of the tunnel for Internet marketing. There is a way to effectively market your product with the use of the Internet. Not only is there a way to use Internet marketing effectively, but there also is a way to reap its benefits while staying within a budget that will help you get through these rough times.

Creating an effective Internet marketing strategy within a budget involves three main steps: creating a great product, developing a wonderful website, and implementing one or more successful marketing strategies.  First, let’s discuss the first step.

Create A Good Product

The first step, creating a great product, can sometimes be overlooked. You must be able to develop a product that fills the void for a consumer need and can be easily delivered online.  Initially, your product must also be exclusive and not in direct competition with other products.  It may be difficult and slow first trying to build a name for yourself and your product, so you must be able to set your product apart from anything else in order to build your audience.

Another consideration is the target market for your product. Most of the successful products conceived by companies have one characteristic: They reach a large target market and have a wide appeal. While it may seem easy to market just anywhere on the Internet and hope to have positive results, you must be able to understand where your market typically spends their time on the Internet in order for your product to reach them.

The most important characteristic to consider when developing your product is quality. Your product not only must deliver what you advertise, but go the extra mile for your consumer. You must surpass the customer expectations in order to build your audience. Customer satisfaction is a great way to build a good report for your business product.

Design A Website

The second step to having a successful Internet marketing strategy is to design a website. In order to decide on the content for your website, you first must define your key target audiences and create a profile for each segment. Figure out as much as you can about your customers. Try to figure their needs for your product and what kind of expectations they may have. This will help provide you with direction to creating your website and figuring out, for example, what texts or graphics to use. You must also set goals or Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for your business. Key Performance Indicators are nothing more than goals that will measure the effectiveness of your website. KPIs are very important because they will help determine the actions your potential customers may take while using your website.

After figuring out your projected target audiences and setting KPIs, the design of your website begins. Designing a website specifically outlined to selling your product is crucial to the success of your business. Your website should not only bring people in, but more importantly, make them buy your product. Each area of your website must be carefully thought out because the first impression of a potential customer is very important on whether or not they will purchase your product. While it would be nice to develop a professional web site, you may not have the time to do so. Instead, just worry about creating a basic web design where additional links regarding your product are available. Avoid using too many Flash plug-ins as they may increase the load time for your potential customer to get onto your website. Also, make sure you do not have any sort of banner ads or outside links because you do not want to distract the customer from your product. Once your company has established itself, you may be able to charge advertisers for spots on your website. Be sure to consider the title, text, and graphics that will be used for your website. Create a title for your website that you feel will be easily identifiable for a customer and that they may use to find your website via search engine. Use tasteful texts and graphics to either get your point across or to enhance the experience of your potential customer. Most importantly, make sure you have the most important information at the top of your page because this part is the first part your potential customers will see.

Good Marketing Strategy = Revenue

The third step to effective Internet marketing within a budget has to do with choosing one or many marketing strategies and implementing to help create revenue. There are four Internet cost-effective marketing strategies that can stretch the value of your money while targeting a market audience potentially interested in your product. These strategies include analytics, pay per click (PPC) advertising, social marketing, and search engine optimization.

Analytics can be very effective because they will help you understand the visitor on your website. They tell you exactly how your marketing dollar is being spent. Analytics also tell you where your customer came from and what exactly they did while on your website. They help prevent guessing what web design changes need to be made. Through analytics, you will figure what is working on your website for customers and also where customers may be abandoning your website. Analytics will help you decide on the modifications that need to be made to improve your conversion rate and customer satisfaction. Search engines sites Google and Yahoo both have free analytics where you will be able to find information helpful to your business.

Another common Internet marketing strategy form involves Pay per click (PPC), which is a form of Internet advertising used on websites, in which advertisers pay their host only when their ad is clicked. Advertisers are able to buy the “search” rights to words and terms relevant to their businesses. Advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Content sites commonly charge a fixed PPC rather than use a bidding system. PPC is a quick and easy way to implement an affiliate model tool to help generate revenue for your business. You have a great amount of control when dealing with your budget, message, and placement in PPC advertising. It can help you provide an easy way for your customers to find you. Affiliate models such as Google AdWords and Microsoft adCenter can provide great opportunities for using PPC advertising and have policies to protect you from click fraud. This is an efficient, cost effective way to get your business out to your audiences.

The third Internet marketing strategy has to do with social networking. In the past 3 years, websites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and LinkedIn have grown into sites used for both businesses and networking amongst family, friends, etc. These social networking sites provide all kinds of benefits for businesses who want to pay for advertisements. These sites feature many different forms of paid advertising such as rich media, typically for video links of movie trailers and previews. They also provide benefits for businesses that simply market by word-of-mouth, blogging, or affiliate with other people. Certain word-of-mouth tools for these social networking sites are successful in the concert entertainment industry, as people are notified of up-to-date information regarding a concert or event. Blogging also have been successful with sites such as digg.com helping to create buzz for certain movies and other forms of entertainment. Using these sites also enables viral advertising, which has worked for many projects in the movie and music industries, as movies such as “Cloverfield” and Nine Inch Nail’s album Year Zero both used various forms of advertising. If you are able to provide relevant content about your business on these sites, customers will be able to provide feedback on things that may or may not be working and help put your business in a better chance to succeed.

The last but very important Internet marketing strategy is about search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is a fairly complicated process that involves writing relevant content built around keywords based off of research, certain inbound/outbound/internal linking plans, and competitive monitoring. While it may be wise to have some kind of SEO consultant to assist you, there still are plenty of ways to use SEO effectively to modify your website without having to spend any money.

In order to successfully use SEO, there are some tips that are beneficial to follow.  First, be willing to make some time commitments to researching certain web directories to see where your business website may fit best. Also, use blogs to provide information that will be more accessible to your target audiences.  Spend time looking as what other competitors may be offering on their website so you are able to understand what you may improve or modify on your own website.  It will also be beneficial to work on updating site content often and submit web pages to search engines such Google or Yahoo!. Use analytics also to help you increase your SEO.

The use of analytics, PPC, social networking, and SEO are great ways to keep an online presence for your business. These all provide ways to target your market audience and cut back on marketing expenses. These strategies are great ways to make it through these tough economic times to help keep the light switch at the end of the tunnel on.
